Dr. Samiran Nundy - Advisory Chair - Surgical Gastroenterology

Dr. Samiran Nundy is currently Emeritus Consultant in the department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. He is the Dean of the Ganga Ram Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education and Research. He started the DNB program in Surgical Gastroenterology, the first in the country and still one of the most sought after. He has mentored most of the leading Liver Transplant Surgeons and many of the leading Gastrointestinal Surgeons in India.

Before moving to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in 1996, Dr. Nundy was Head, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He helped found the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Liver Transplantation at AIIMS. This department is setup by him and is the most sought after M.Ch Program in Gastrointestinal Surgery.

Dr. Nundy studied medicine at Cambridge University and the Guy's Hospital, London. He completed his surgery residency at the Hammersmith Hospital followed by a series of surgical training programmes at Guy’s Hospital, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

During his stay abroad, he taught at Cambridge University, London University and Harvard University before returning to India and joining AIIMS in 1975. Over his 4 Decades of vast experience as a Gastro Surgeon, he has worn several hats including that of an Outstanding Academician, a Spirited Innovator and able Administrator.

His clinical and research interests are in the management of complicated diseases of the liver, bowel and pancreas as well as in the quality of Indian medical research and publications.

  • He is the Founding Editor of ‘The National Medical Journal of India’ and ‘Tropical Gastroenterology’.
  • Incumbent Editor in Chief of the Current Medicine Research and Practice.
  • He also serves on a number of journal Editorial Boards that includes the ‘British Medical Journal’ and ‘Indian Journal of Medical Ethics’.

Awards:

  • In 1985, the Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian Civilian honour of Padma Shri.

  • He has led the team which is credited with 241 liver sections during the period 1996-2005, the details of which have been published in a medical paper, Two hundred and forty-one consecutive liver resections: an experience from India.
  • His research findings have been documented by way of several articles and medical papers of which ResearchGate has listed 241, while Google Scholar, another online knowledge repository, has listed 320.
  • He is also a part of the team of 290 specialists of DoctorNDTV.Com, an online consultation forum, functioning under the aegis of NDTV network.
  • He also serves as a member of the advisory board of Medicounsel, a medical advisory organization composed of noted medical specialists, engaged in providing guidance to patients inflicted with rare and complicated diseases.
